We resolved early on to rule out zombies, which are basically just vitally challenged people, and vampires, largely because that genre’s good for a whole separate feature on its own, and we wanted to make room for all the killer rabbits, killer plants, killer fish and killer dessert foods this list demanded. Biggest challenge in constructing this list was deciding exactly what constituted a ‘monster’. Typically, movie monsters differ from more traditional antagonists in that many exist due to circumstances beyond their control their actions not entirely based on choice, potentially making them objects of empathy to film viewers.
In Japanese cinema, such monsters are referred to as Kaiju. Monster movies originated with adaptations of horror folklore and literature. In most cases it is applied to films that feature oversized monsters. The film may also belong to the horror, fantasy or science fiction genre.
A monster movie (creature feature or giant monster film) is a film which revolves around innocent civilians and emergency services struggling to stay alive in assaults against giant monsters.
